UTILIZING SIMILAR teamwork, the real-life Phillips and members of his AFL-CIO-affiliated union, the International Organization of Masters, Mates & Pilots (MM&P), are now rallying against a threat to their livelihood more serious than Somali pirates. On the 17,000-ton Maersk Alabama, he notes, "the crew and I were ready for each crisis" because "we'd drilled for exactly those kinds of situations." A Captain's Duty provides a vivid account of the teamwork and discipline required to survive at sea, amid the occupational hazards created by hurricanes, shipboard fires, container accidents, collisions and, yes, armed assaults by would-be hijackers. Indeed, in his book and film-related interviews, the Massachusetts Maritime Academy graduate emphasizes the collective nature of freighter work, both on a day-to-day basis and in moments of danger on the high seas. "There was a ship with 19 crew members that this story is about, not just me.They acted bravely and acted properly. It would be a different story without their actions." "I do not like the movie named after me, as it makes it out to be just me out there," he told Destination Vermont, a travel magazine. Phillips himself has been exceedingly modest about his role in the Maersk Alabama drama. In Captain Phillips, it's a toss-up who should get the hero's garland-the film's eponymous captain, his well-trained and fast-acting crew, or the Navy SEALs who rescued Phillips after the pirates took him hostage and tried to escape in a small boat. On October 11, Captain Phillips got his second 15 minutes of international acclaim when Sony Pictures unveiled a big-budget film based on his book. But as he recalls in his 2010 memoir, A Captain's Duty (co-authored with Stephan Talty), "the Phillips are a wild bunch with our own brand of humor, which not everyone gets. One example: That night, my sisters were joking.about Hollywood making a film about the hostage-taking and began casting all the parts." According to Phillips, his siblings favored the dashing George Clooney to play the lead role.įour years after his near-death experience off the coast of Africa, America's most famous maritime union member has had to settle for Tom Hanks instead. Captain Phillips: We all got bosses.WHEN SOMALI pirates captured Captain Richard Phillips in 2009, his large Irish-American family gathered at a farmhouse in Vermont to await news of his fate.Īt the time, the Maersk Alabama's skipper was just one AK-47 round away from perishing at sea. Captain Phillips: You had thirty thousand dollars. Captain Phillips: The problem is not me talking. Captain Phillips: 6 million dollars? So what are you doing here? Muse: Shut up, Irish. Captain Phillips: They would rather sink this boat than let you get me Somalia. Captain Phillips: They can't let you win. Captain Phillips: The Navy is not gonna let you win. Muse: Maybe in America, Irish, maybe in America. Muse: I'm the captain now.Ĭaptain Phillips: There's got to be something other than being a fisherman or kidnapping people. Muse: Thirty thousand dollars? What am I? Do I look like a beggar? Captain Richard Phillips: You know, I think we have in the safe, we got thirty thousand dollars. Kenny? Kenny: Yeah? Captain Phillips: Kenny, what do we have in the safe? About what, thirty.thirty thousand dollars in the safe? Kenny: Uh.yeah. Muse: Dollars? Captain Phillips: Uh.we do. What items you carry? Captain Phillips: What do you mean? Muse: TV? Car? Captain Phillips: Shipping TV, car? No, no, we just uh.we just got. Muse: From now on this one is called Irish, okay? Muse: Okay, Irish. Najee: Yes! Yes! Muse: You, Yankee? Captain Phillips: Me? Muse: Yeah? Captain Phillips: Yeah, yeah, yeah. The ship, where from? Captain Phillips: The ship? Uh.America, it's an American ship. When we get paid, everything gonna be okay. Captain Phillips: They're not here to fish. No problem, Irish everything gonna be okay.ĭialogue UKMTO Officer: Maersk Alabama, you should alert your crew, get your fire hoses ready. You said this was just business! Is this how you do business?.You're not just a fisherman! You're not just a fisherman!.If they find you, remember, you know this ship, they don't. Listen up, we have been boarded by armed pirates.

Soon after this, Green suggested to Fleetwood that they form a new band. The fifth song was an instrumental that Green named after the rhythm section, "Fleetwood Mac" ("Mac" being short for McVie). Mayall gave Green free recording time as a gift, which Fleetwood, McVie and Green used to record five songs. The Bluesbreakers then consisted of Green, Fleetwood, John McVie and Mayall. John Mayall agreed and Fleetwood joined the Bluesbreakers. Green had been in two bands with Mick Fleetwood, Peter B's Looners and the subsequent Shotgun Express (which featured a young Rod Stewart as vocalist), and suggested Fleetwood as a replacement for drummer Aynsley Dunbar when Dunbar left the Bluesbreakers to join the new Jeff Beck/Rod Stewart band. The early show is great, the guys (ie The Jet Set) are having a grand old time. They are far better than the overproduced disco record they put out in the late 70's. I wonder why this thing has never been officially released?Īll of these great acoustic performances by McGuinn, Clark & Hillman (and occasionally Crosby) need some sort of official release. McGuinn, Clark & Hillman was a 1970s American trio of Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark and Chris. It can be heard here on youtube, and two other songs (Crazy Ladies and Train Leaves Here this Morning) are here. Strong reactions to claims made by philosophers, other students, your professor, or anyone else may prevent you from considering the argument objectively. While emotions play an important role in thinking, they can also cloud judgment. See the section on counterexamples in the chapter on logic and reasoning for more discussion of this topic. If you practice using this tool, you will become a better critical thinker. Counterexamples are powerful tools to use in evaluating philosophical arguments. And yet, just as surely as I know I was born, I know that my mother was born. My mother’s birth necessarily preceded my birth by many years, so it would be impossible for me to have any direct experience of my mother’s birth. Clearly, given that I was born, I had a mother, and she, too, must have been born to have given birth to me. Here is an example: I know my mother was born. To produce a counterexample to this claim, we must imagine something that everyone knows is true but that would be impossible to experience directly. Suppose someone wants to argue that the only legitimate way to know something is to have direct experience of it. A counterexample is an instance that renders an argument invalid by satisfying all the premises of the claim but demonstrating the conclusion is false. Generating counterexamples is an effective way to test your own or others’ claims. Learn more about the strawman fallacy in the chapter on logic and reasoning. You may be tempted to strawman arguments you naturally disagree with, but you will become a better philosopher when you steelman those arguments instead. This is the opposite of strawmanning an argument, in which you construct a weaker version of the argument to easily defeat it. When you steelman an argument, you make the strongest possible case in favor of it. Sometimes this strategy is called steelmanning the opposing argument. When considering these views philosophically, try to actively promote the alternative point of view. Or, conversely, you may think there is a scientific explanation for everything. For instance, when considering issues in metaphysics, you may believe that parts of experience-like consciousness, God, or free will-cannot be explained by the natural sciences. But a similar strategy may also be useful in metaphysics or epistemology. Promote Alternative Points of ViewĪctively considering points of view contrary to your own is most useful in political or ethical areas of philosophy. In these cases, abstracting from the particular circumstances may not be useful. In such cases, specific experience can help you, as well as others, reshape the general view so that it is more comprehensive and inclusive. If you are a person who belongs to a nondominant or minority group or a group that has been historically marginalized, your personal experience may shed new light on a problem. For example, the prevailing views in philosophy as well as any other subject are biased in that they reflect the views of the dominant cultural group who wrote the texts. In such instances, your specific experience provides critical information that needs to be preserved. In some cases, however, the specific features of your experience are indispensable to the philosophical position you wish to take. So when you think about justice in political organizations, it is important to imagine those not limited by your personal experience, moment in history, or location. But these institutions differ from the way government works in other countries or in different eras of history. For instance, if you wish to imagine a governing arrangement among citizens, you will probably default to the governmental organizations you are familiar with in your community, state, or nation. This process of abstraction can make the concept appropriately general. To arrive at more general and representative notions, use your imagination to separate the specific properties of your experience from your worldview. Your personal experience has limitations when it comes to understanding what is going on in the world at large. However, if your view of morality, consciousness, or free will is tied to notions that come from a specific time or location, then your view is not likely to be objective. Most people’s point of view is based on generalizing from their specific circumstances and experiences. In this section, we will explore several strategies for approaching philosophical problems with less subjective bias. To be more objective in thinking about issues, problems, or values, we should actively engage in strategies that remove us from our naturally subjective mindset. We are likely to assume that our experience or our perspective is generally true for others. See the introduction to philosophy chapter to learn more about how philosophers arrive at the truth.
